Section 2 Error Correction (10’)
Directions: This section consists of a short passage. In this
passage, there are altogether I0 mistakes, one in each numbered line. You may
have to change a word, add a word or delete a word. Mark out the mistakes and
put the corrections in the blanks provided. If you change a word, cross it out
and write the correct word in the corresponding blank. If you add a word, put
an insertion mark (A) in the right place and write the missing word in the
blank. If you delete a word, cross it and put a slash (/) in the blank.
1
found /\ new→a
Some cities have lost
their original purpose…”
2
filling→filled
3
though
just as表示“正像”,though多余。
4
this→what
5
was→were
that引导定语从句,先行词“descriptions…and the enormous contrasts”为复数,因此谓语动词要用复数形式were。
6
dissimilar→similar
7
lies→lie
behind it lie two myths 是个倒装句,主语为two myths,因此谓语动词要使用复数。
8
that→which
9
it→them
10
late→later
II. Reading Comprehension (40’)
Section 1 Multiple Choice (20’)
Directions: In this section there are reading passages followed by
multiple-choice questions. Read the passages and then mark your answers on your
answer sheet.
Passage one
Are some people born clever, and
others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our
experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To
some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education
can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand,
a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less
than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a
person’s intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those
limits will depend on his environment. This view, now is held by most experts,
can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that
intelligence is something that we are born with. The closer the blood
relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligence.
Thus if we take two strangers by chance from the population, it seems that
their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other
hand, we compare two twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each
other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have
similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on
birth.
Imagine now that we take two
twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example,
to a university and the other to a factory separately where the work is boring.
We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this shows that
environment as well as birth plays an important role. This conclusion is also
suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other,
but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of
intelligence.
1
Which of these sentences best describes the writer’s point in Para.1?
A. To some extent, intelligence
is given at birth.
B. intelligence is developed by
the environment.
C. Some people are born clever
and others born stupid.
D. Intelligence is fixed at
birth, but is developed by the environment.
2
It is suggested in this passage that _____.
A. unrelated people are not
likely to have different intelligence
B. close relations usually have
similar intelligence
C. the closer the blood relationship
between people, the more different they are likely to be in intelligence
D. people who live in close
contact with each other are not likely to have similar degrees of intelligence
3
Brothers and sisters are likely to _____.
A. have similar intelligence
B. have different intelligence
C. go to the same university
D. go to the same factory
4
In Line 5, Para. 1, the word “surroundings” means
A. intelligence
B. life
C. environments
D. housing
5
The best title for this article would be _____.
A. On Intelligence
B. What Intelligence Means
C. We Are Born with Intelligence
D. Environment Plays a Part in
Developing Intelligence
1 D 第一段倒数第二句“Therefore, the limits of person’s intelligence are
fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his
environment.”
closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to
be intelligence.”
like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar
intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.”
Passage two
Food can be divided into two
basic categories:
real food
and pleasure food.
Real food
is fuel for the body’s needs,
while
pleasure food which is high in fat and sugar, is primarily for taste
satisfaction.
The
categories are pretty obvious.
Broccoli
is real food.
Cookies
are in the pleasure group.
When you are hungry, you are faced with
choices. If you aren’t
suffering from excessive hunger,
you can
be rational about them.
Go to the
refrigerator.
What
looks good?
If you
have chosen a real food,
say, a turkey sandwich, you can be certain
your body can use it for fuel.
Eat it
and enjoy.
Two hours later you are hungry
again. Back to the
refrigerator.
What
looks good?
Ice cream. Stop! Employ your will power
just a little.
Ice cream
is not what your body needs.
Does
something else look good?
Yes, a piece of toast with
peanut butter and a glass of milk sound good too. Okay, go ahead, remembering that high-fat real
foods should be eaten in moderation.
One trick is to eliminate
pleasure foods from your kitchen. Instead, keep a variety of
high-quality foods available at all times. In short, buy lots of delicious real food, food you really like, and get rid of the
junk.
But what if you have ice cream on
hand and nothing sounds good?
Although
you don’t want to eat pleasure foods whenever the urge strikes, there is a legitimate
place for them in your diet.
If you
have analyzed your feelings and there are no other needs imitating hunger, eat the ice cream. You have not failed. On the contrary, you have accepted your
natural appetite,
but not
blindly.
Surprisingly, when you know you can
eat anything you want,
and that
you never have to put up with unsatisfied hunger again, it takes a lot of pressure off. You will begin to want
to eat what your body needs,
and your
body will begin to need foods that will lead to slimness.
6
Which of the following statements NOT true?
A. The author is against getting
rid of pleasure food altogether.
B. One can eat the-high-fat real
foods heartily since it is fuel for the body.
C. Make sure to keep pleasure
food such as ice cream in your diet.
D. Of course you can sometimes
have ice cream if you really want to.
7
What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Real Food And Pleasure Food
B. Reducing Weight
C. Limit Your Consumption Of
Pleasure Food
D. How To Choose Food When You
Are Hungry
8
What can you assume from the last paragraph?
A. Being able to eat anything
doesn’t necessarily imply pleasure.
B. Real foods may lead to
slimness.
C. Eat only what your body needs.
D. Be sure to satisfy your hunger
whenever it strikes you.
9
What can broccoli be except _____.
A. ice cream
B. cauliflower
C. a turkey sandwich
D. a piece of toast
10
Judging from the fourth paragraph (Line 3), what does “junk” mean?
A. Food like ice cream.
B. Food you do not like.
C. Pleasure foods.
D. Low-quality foods.
that high-fat real foods should be eaten in moderation.”
food和pleasure food,在第四段首句提出“One trick is to eliminate pleasure foods from your
8 A 最后一段第一句“Surprisingly, when you know you can
eat anything you want,
and that
you never have to put up with unsatisfied hunger again, it takes a lot of pressure off.”
9 A cauliflower意为“花椰菜”,与broccoli为近义词,属于real food;第二、三段提到a
turkey sandwich和a piece of toast均是real
trick is to eliminate pleasure foods from your kitchen. Instead, keep a variety of high-quality
foods available at all times.”
Section 2 Answering Questions (20’)
Directions: Read the following passages and then answer the
questions which follow each passage. Use only information from the passage you
have just read and write your answer in the corresponding space on your answer
sheet.
Questions 1~3
Take the case of public education
alone. The principal difficulty faced by the schools has been the tremendous
increase in the number of pupils. This has been caused by the advance of the
legal age for going into industry and the impossibility of finding a job even
when the legal age has been reached. In view of the technological improvements
in the last few years, business will require in the future proportionately
fewer workers than ever before. The result will be still further raising of he
legal age for going into employment, and still further difficulty in finding
employment when hat age has been attained. If we cannot put our children to
work, we must put them in school.
We may also be quite confident
that the present trend toward a shorter day and a shorter week will be
maintained. We have developed and shall continue to have a new leisure class.
Already the public agencies for adult education are swamped by the tide that
has swept over them since depression began. They will be little better off when
it is over. Their support must come from the taxpayer.
It is surely too much to hope
that these increases in the cost of public education can be borne by the local
communities. They cannot care for the present restricted and inadequate system.
The local communities have failed in their efforts to cope with unemployment.
They cannot expect to cope with public education on the scale on which we must
attempt it. The answer to the problem of unemployment has been Federal relief.
The answer to the problem of public education may have to be much the same, and
properly so. If there is one thing in which the citizens of all parts of the
country have an interest, it is in the decent education of the citizens of all
parts of the country. Our income tax now goes in part to keep our neighbors
alive. It may have to go in part as well to make our neighbors intelligent. We
are now attempting to preserve the present generation through Federal relief of
the destitute. Only a people determined to ruin the next generation will refuse
such Federal funds as public education may require.
1
What is the passage mainly about?
2
What are the reasons for the increase in the number of students?
3
According to the author, what is the answer to the problem of public education?
1 How to cope with
the shortage of funds for public education.
2 Raising
of the legal age for going to work.
This has been caused
by the advance of the legal age for going into industry and the impossibility
of finding a job even when the legal age has been reached”说明学生人数升高是由法定工作年龄提高所造成的,法定年龄即使到了也可能找不到工作。)
3 The Federal Government
should allocate Federal funds for public education.
The answer to the
problem of unemployment has been Federal relief. The answer to the problem of
public education may have to be much the same, and properly so.”
Questions 4~5
Reebok executives do not like to
hear their stylish athletic shoes called “footwear for yuppies”. They contend
that Reebok shoes appeal to diverse market segments, especially now that the
company offers basketball and children’s shoes for the under-18 set and walking
shoes for older customers not interested in aerobics or running. The executives
also point out that through recent acquisitions they have added hiking boots,
dress and casual shoes, and high-performance athletic footwear to their product
lines, all of which should attract new and varied groups of customers.
Still, despite its emphasis on
new markets, Reebok plans few changes in the upmarket retailing network that
helped push sales to $1 billion annually, ahead of all other sports shoe
marketers. Reebok shoes, which are priced from $27 to $85, will continue to be
sold only in better specialty, sporting goods, and department stores, in
accordance with the company’ s view that consumers judge the quality of the
brand by the quality of its distribution.
In the past few years, the
Massachusetts-based company has imposed limits on the number of its
distributors (and the number of shoes supplied to stores), partly out of
necessity. At times the unexpected demand for Reebok’s exceeded supply, and the
company could barely keep up with orders from the dealers it already had. These
fulfillment problems seem to be under control now, but the company is still
selective about its distributors. At present, Reebok shoes are available in
about five thousand retail stores in the United States.
Reebok has already anticipated
that walking shoes will be the next fitness-related craze, replacing aerobics
shoes the same way its brightly colored, soft leather exercise footwear
replaced conventional running shoes. Through product diversification and
careful market research, Reebok hopes to avoid the distribution problems Nike
came across several years ago, when Nike misjudged the strength of the aerobics
shoe craze and was forced to unload huge inventories of running shoes through
discount stores.
4 What does Reebok’s
view imply that “consumers judge the quality of the brand by the quality of its
distribution” (Line 5, Para. 2)?
5
What lesson has Reebok learned from Nike’s distribution problems?
4 Consumers
believe that first-rate products are only sold by high-quality stores.
Reebok shoes, which
are priced from $27 to $85, will continue to be sold only in better specialty,
sporting goods, and department stores, in accordance with the company’s view
that consumers judge the quality of the brand by the quality of its
5 A company should
correctly evaluate the impact of a new craze on the market.
the strength of the aerobics shoe craze and was forced to unload huge
inventories of running shoes through discount stores.”
III. Writing (30’)
Some people think that
they can learn better by themselves than with a teacher. Others think that it
is always better to have a teacher. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons
to develop your essay. Write a composition of about 400 words on your view of
the topic.
Admittedly, a clear division is
usually made between studying with a teacher and studying by themselves.
Although studying by students themselves has many advantages, such as no limit
in time and location, I believe that students can learn better with a teacher.
First, students can have
systematic knowledge when studying with a teacher. Because of teaching
experience, teachers know how to teach certain sorts of knowledge. They know
that what knowledge needs to be learned first and which subject can be learned subsequently.
Therefore, students can have a complete system of knowledge if they follow the
teachers’ instructions. However, if students study by themselves, they may not possess
the experience which teachers have. As a result, they do not know how to have a
complete knowledge system. Even if students have some knowledge about how to
study, their experience may be not correct. Based on arguments above, I believe
that students can learn knowledge more completely and systematically with a
teacher than by themselves.
Second, students can solve
problems they come across when studying with a teacher. Teachers have faced a
huge amount of problems that kinds of students faced, so they know the correct
way to solve the problems of students no matter in study or in life. If
students study with a teacher, they can ask questions and seek for help from
teacher. However, if students study only by themselves, they may not solve
problems due to lack of experience. Thus, I believe that teachers can help
students solve problems that cannot be dealt with by students themselves.
Third, teachers can present kinds
of methods for effective teaching. For example, teachers know when they have to
change communicating techniques to make sure that students can grasp the idea.
And also, teachers can use diagram, table and image to illustrate their point. On
the contrast, if students study by themselves, they may only have books and do
not know other means to learn knowledge when they have difficulties in study. Therefore,
students can study knowledge effectively with a teacher instead of stunt by
difficulties when they study by themselves.
In conclusion, although studying
by students themselves does have some advantages, such as no studying
limitation in time and location, studying with the help of teacher is a more
desirable way because of better consequence, useful advice and various methods.
Consequently, I think that students can learn better with teacher than by
themselves.
