Ⅲ. Reading Comprehension (20 points)
Directions: Read the
following passage and then answer questions 41 to 60 by selecting the best one
from A, B, C and D. Indicate your answers on the Answer Sheet.
It was on the 28th
of July, which I believe was a Wednesday, that I visited my father for the
first time during his illness and for the last time in his life. The moment
that I saw him I knew why I had put off this visit so long. I had told my
mother that I did not want to see him because I hated him. But this was not
true. It was only that I had hated him and I wanted to hold on to this hatred.
I did not want to look on him as a ruin: it was not a ruin I had hated.
I imagine that one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is
because they sense, once hate is gone, that they will be forced to deal with
pain.
We traveled out
to him, his older sister and myself, to what seemed to be the very end of a
very Long Island. It was hot and dusty and we wrangled, my aunt and I,
all the way out, over the fact that I had recently begun to smoke and, as she
said, to give myself airs. But I knew that she wrangled with me because she
could not bear to face the fact of her brother’s dying. Neither could I endure
the reality of her despair, her unstated bafflement as to what had
happened to her brother’s life, and her own. So we wrangled and I smoked and
from time to time she fell into a heavy reverie. Covertly, I
watched her face, which was the face of an old woman; it had fallen in. the
eyes were sunken and lightless: soon she would be dying, too.
In my childhood—it
had not been so long ago—I had thought her beautiful. She had been quick-witted
and quick-moving and very generous with all the children and each of her visits
had been an event. At one time one of my brothers and myself had thought of
running away to live with her. Now she could no longer produce out of her
handbag some unexpected and yet familiar delight. She made me feel pity and revulsion
and fear. It was awful to realize that she no longer caused me to feel
affection. The closer we came to the hospital the more querulous she
became and at the same time, naturally, grew more dependent on me. Between pity
and guilt and fear I began to feel that there was another me trapped in my
skull like a jack-in-the-box who might escape my control at any moment and fill
the air with screaming.
She began to cry
the moment we entered the room and she saw him lying there, all shriveled and
still, like a little black monkey. The great, gleaming apparatus which fed him
and would have compelled him to be still even if he had been able to move
brought to mind, not beneficence, but torture; the tubes entering his arm made
me think of pictures I had seen when a child, of Gulliver, tied down by the
pygmies on that island. My aunt wept and, wept, there was a whistling sound in
my father’s throat; nothing was said: he could not speak. I wanted to take his
hand, to say something. But I do not know what I could have said, even if he
could have heard me. He was not really in that room with us, he bad at last
really embarked on his journey; and though my aunt told me that he said
he was going to meet Jesus. I did not hear anything except that whistling in
his throat. The doctor came back and we left into that unbearable train again,
and home. In the morning came the telegram saving that he was dead. Then the
house was suddenly full of relatives, friends, hysteria, and confusion and I
quickly left my mother and the children to the care of those impressive women,
who, in Negro communities at least, automatically appear at times of bereavement
armed with lotions proverbs and patience and an ability to cook. I went
downtown. By the time I returned later the same day, my mother had been carried
to the hospital and the baby had been born.

Nothing could be
more obvious than the evidence supporting Riesman. Scofflaws abound in amazing
variety. The graffiti-prone turn public surfaces into visual rubbish. Bicyclists
often ride as though two-wheeled vehicles are exempt from a traffic laws
Litterbugs convert their communities into trash dumps. Widespread flurries of
ordinances have failed to clear public place of high-decibel portable radios,
just as earlier laws failed to wipe out the beer-soaked hooliganism that
plagues many parks. Tobacco addicts remain hopelessly blind to signs that say NO
SMOKING. Respectably dressed pot smokers no longer bother to duck out of public
sight to pass around a joint. The flagrant of cocaine is a festering scandal on
middle and upper-class life. And then there are (hello, everybody!) the
jaywalkers.

Fun is hard to
have.
Fun is a rare
jewel.
Somewhere along
the line people got the modern idea that fun was there for the asking, that
people deserve fun, that if we didn’t have a little fun every day we would turn
into (sakes alive) puritans.
“Was it fun?”
became the question that overshadowed all other questions: good questions like:
Was it moral? Was it kind? Was it honest? Was it beneficial? Was it generous?
Was it necessary? And (my favorite) was it selfless?
When the
pleasure got to be the main thing, the fun fetish was sure to follow.
Everything was supposed to be fun. If it wasn’t fun, then by Jove we were going
to make it fun, or else.
Think of all the
things that got the reputation of being fun. Family outings were supposed to be
fun. Sex, was supposed to be fun. Education was supposed to be fun. Church was supposed
to be fun. Staying fit was supposed to be fun.
Just to make
sure that everybody knew how much fun we were having, we put happy faces on
flunking test papers, dirty bumpers, sticky refrigerator doors, bathroom
minors.
If a kid,
looking at his very happy parents traipsing through that very happy Disney
World, said. “This ain’t fun, ma.” his ma’s heart sank. She wondered where she
had gone wrong. Everybody told her what fun family outings to Disney World
would be. Golly gee, what was the matter?
Fun got to be
such a big thing that everybody started to look for more and more thrilling
ways to supply it. One way was to step up the level of danger or licentiousness
or alcohol or drug consumption so that you could be sure that, no matter what,
you would manage to have a little fun. Television commercials brought a lot of
fun and fun-loving folks into the picture. Everything that people in those
commercials did looked like fun: taking Digital snapshots, swilling beer,
buying insurance, mopping the floor bowling, taking aspirin. We all wished. I’m
sure. that we could have half as much as those rough-and-ready guys around the
locker room, flicking each other with towers and pouring champagne. The more
commercials people watched, the more they wondered when the fun would start in
their own lives. It was pretty depressing.
Big occasions were
supposed to be fun. Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter were obviously supposed
to be fun. Your wedding day was supposed to be fun. Your honeymoon was supposed
to be the epitome of fundom. And so we ended up going through every Big Event
we ever celebrated, waiting for the fun to start.
It occurred to
me, while I was sitting waiting for the fun to start that not much is and that
I should tell you just in case you’re worried about your fun capacity.
I don’t mean to
put a damper on things. I just mean we ought to treat fun reverently. It is a
mystery. It cannot be caught like a virus. It cannot be trapped like an animal.
The good of mirth is paying us back for all those of thinking fun was
everywhere by refusing to come to our party. I don’t want to blaspheme fun
anymore. When fun comes in on little dancing feet you probably won’t be
expecting it. In fact, I bet it comes when you’re doing your duty, your job or
your work. It may even come on a Tuesday.
I remember one
day, long ago, on which I had an especially good time. Pam Davis and I walked
to the College Village drug store one Saturday morning to buys some candy. We
were about 12 years old (fun age). She got her Bit-O-Henry. I got my malted
milk balls, chocolate stars, Chunkys, and a small bag of M & M’s. We
started back to her house. I was going to spend the night. We had the whole day
to look forward to. We had plenty of candy. It was a long way to Pam’s house
but every time we got weary Pam would put her hand over her eyes, scan the
horizon like a sailor and say, “Oughta reach home by nightfall,” at which point
the two of us would laugh until we thought we couldn’t stand it another minute.
Then after we got clam, she’d say it again. You should have been there. It was
the kind of day and friendship and occasion that made me deeply regretful that
I had to grow up.
It was fun.
Ⅱ. Composition (35 points)
Newspaper
reports and job-related surveys frequently show that today’s youth’s major
objective is to be financially well off. While this has nothing wrong,
developing a meaningful philosophy of life is very important. Based on this
idea, write an essay on the following topic:
Quality of Life Is Much
More Than a Job
Remember to
indicate your position clearly, support yourself with sound, reasons and
sufficient evidence, and bring it to a natural solution. A logical organization
benefits your essay in every possible way. Your essay should contain a minimum
of 350 words. Write your essay on the Answer Sheet.

因此选A。
53C to give myself air
因此选A。
59D 最后一段倒数第五句写到“we left into that unbearable train again”,可知来回的是乘坐的火车。

Spring has no
speech, nothing but rustling of and whispering. Spring has so much more than
speech in its unfolding flowers and leaves, and the rolling of its streams, and
in its sweet restless seeking.
PART THREE
I. Summary (15 points)
Today, the most
frequently asked question is “Was it fun?”. We insist that life should be fun,
and everything can be made fun. Thus, everyone takes great effort to pursue fun
without bothering ourselves thinking about its morality and its necessity. We
grow frustrated if we fail to have fun. So we begin to look for more thrilling
ways to supply it, and wait for every big occasion in our life to start, such
as wedding day and honeymoon. However, fun is supposed to be treated with
reverence, since it is a mystery. It exists in many trivial things, even in
your duty and work. Therefore, it is the unexpected fun that we should treasure
most.
Ⅱ. Composition (35 points)
Quality of Life is Much More Than a Job
Nowadays, most
young people view a job mainly as a way of making money, and hold that the more
money a job can make, the better it is. In some way, money has become the
criterion of life quality. Although it is quite reasonable to pursue material
comfort and monetary success, there are more important aspects concerning
quality of life. For my part, quality of life is much more than a job.
First, a life of
high quality should be one of constant progress. By accomplishing the tasks, we
may find ourselves capable of solving many problems. When being challenged by
tougher assignments, we can learn a lot more. Thus, the process of work is a
process of challenging ourselves, making constant progress, and improving
ourselves. Moreover, our horizons can be broadened when we cope with
complicated situations, and it maybe has something to do with the formation of
our bettering personality, such as making us strong-minded. These are more
important than material success.
Second, a life
of high quality should be one in which we can realize our own personal value. In
other words, we do a job to fulfill ourselves, apart from earning money. In
this way, we can feel that we are useful to the society and our existence is
meaningful. By making considerable devotion to the society can we get the
respect from other people and enjoy a kind of satisfaction.
Third, a life of
high quality should be one which consists of social activities and
communication. In the process of doing jobs, many opportunities to contact with
other people are available. We are provided with occasions where we meet more
people and take part in more social activities. Social life, which is a quite
essential part of our life, makes our life more colorful.
All in all, a
life of high quality should be one in which we can make constant progress,
realize our own personal value and be involved in social activities and
communication, rather than focus on how much money we can make. Though
financial success can be important to some extent, it can not overweigh some
other spiritual aspects in life. There are more goals for us to pursue in our
life.
