Part Three Reading Comprehension
Directions: There are three reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and write your answer on the Answer Sheet. (30%)
Passage 1
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.
In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions of male superiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and in decision makes for equality and this in turn leads to further sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by cooperation rather than by the “battle of the sexes”.
If the process goes too far and men’s role is regarded as less important—and that has happened in some cases—we are as badly off as before, only in reverse.
It is time to reassess the role of the man in the American family. What we need, rather, is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credit—nor the blame. We have almost given up saying that a woman’s place is in the home. We are beginning, however, to analyze man’s place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Not is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child.
The family is a co-operative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down rules, because each family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems.
Excessive authoritarianism has unhappy consequences, whether it wears skirts or trousers, and the ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is relevant not only to a healthy democracy, but also to a healthy family.
31 The danger in the sharing of household tasks by the mother and the father is that _____.
A. the role of the father may not be superior to that of the mother
B. the role of the mother may become an inferior one
C. the children will grow up believing that life is a battle of sexes
D. sharing leads to constant arguing
32 According to the author, the father’s role in the home is _____.
A. minor because he is an ineffectual parent
B. irrelevant to the healthy development of the child
C. quite important to the healthy development of the child
D. more important than the role of the child’s mother
33 What do psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family think?
A. A woman’s place is in the home—now as always.
B. Man also has a place in the home.
C. It’s father’s job to bring up children.
D. Nowadays men’s role is regarded as less important.
34 With which of the following statements would the author be most likely to agree?
A. A healthy, cooperative family is a basic ingredient of a healthy society.
B. Men are basically opposed to sharing household chores.
C. Division of household responsibilities is workable only in theory.
D. The family is a cooperative enterprise for which it is necessary to lay down rules.
35 What is the passage mainly about?
A. American families that are run by women are happier.
B. The roles of men and women will always be unequal in the American household.
C. Both men and women play an important role in a healthy family.
D. Women should allow men to do most of the work in the home.
31 A 根据文章第一段中的“notions of male superiority are hard to maintain”以及第二段中的“men’s role is regarded as less important”,可以明确得出家务的分担会使得丈夫无法维持比妻子更高的地位。
32 C 文章第三段指出,现在需要重新评价美国父亲在家中的作用,根据“bringing up children involves a partnership of equals”可知,抚养孩子需要父母双方的努力。
33 B 根据第三段“more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credit—nor the blame”可知,男性在家庭中也扮演着重要角色。
Passage 2
Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.
The fact that blind people can “see” things using other parts of their bodies apart from their eyes may help us to understand our feelings about colour. If they can sense colour differences then perhaps we, too, are affected by color unconsciously.
Manufacturers have discovered by trial and error that sugar sells badly in green wrappings, and that blue foods are considered unpleasant and the cosmetics should never be packaged brown. These discoveries have grown into a whole discipline of color psychology that now finds application in everything from fashion to interior decoration. Some of our preferences are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the colour of the night sky and therefore associated with passivity and calm, while yellow is a day colour with associations of energy and incentive. For primitive man, activity during the day meant hunting and attacking, while he soon saw as red, the colour of blood and rage and the heat that came with effort. And green is associated with passive defense and self- preservation. Experiments have shown that colors, partly because of their physiological association, also have a direct psychological effect. People exposed to bright red show an increase in heartbeat, and blood pressure; red is exciting. Similar exposure to pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming colour. Because of its exciting connotations (涵义), red was chosen as the signal for danger, but closer analysis shows that a vivid yellow can produce a more basic state of alertness and alarm, so fire engines and ambulances in some advanced communities are now rushing around in bright yellow color that stop the traffic dead.
36 Manufacturers found out that colour affects sales ______.
A. by experimenting with different colors
B. by experience over a long period of time
C. by trying out colour on blind people
D. by developing the discipline of colour psychology
37 Our preferences for certain colours are ______.
A. partly due to psychological factors
B. linked with our primitive ancestors
C. dependent on our character
D. associated with the time of day
38 If people are exposed to bright red, which of the following things does NOT happen?
A. They feel afraid.
B. Their hearts beat faster.
C. They breathe faster.
D. Their blood pressure rises.
39 Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The psychology of colour is of some practical use.
B. Colour probably has an effect on us which we are not conscious of.
C. People exposed to pure blue start to breathe slowly.
D. Yellow fire engines have caused many traffic accidents in some advanced communities.
40 The most suitable title for this passage may be ______.
A. The Practical Use of Colour
B. Colour and Business
C. Colour Experiments
D. Colour and Feelings
36 A 根据第二段“Manufacturers have discovered by trial and error that sugar sells badly in green wrappings”可知,生产商通过反复试验发现糖用绿色包装的话销售会比较差,所以,生产商发现颜色会影响销量是通过对不同的颜色做实验得出的。
37 A 根据第二段“Some of our preferences are clearly psychological”可知,我们对特定颜色的偏好部分是由于心理原因。
38 A 根据第二段“People exposed to bright red show an increase in heartbeat, and blood pressure; red is exciting.”
39 D 根据文章末尾“a vivid yellow can produce a more basic state of alertness and alarm, so fire engines and ambulances in some advanced communities are now rushing around in bright yellow color that stop the traffic dead”可知,黄色会使人产生一种警觉,所以消防车和救护车是黄色的以阻止交通死亡事件的发生,所以D项“在一些高端住宅区的黄色消防车导致很多交通事故的发生”是错误的。
Passage 3
Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage.
A study of art history might be a good way to learn more about a culture than is possible to learn in general history classes. Most typical history courses concentrate on politics, economics, and war. But art history focuses on much more than this because art reflects not only the political values of a people, but also religious beliefs, emotions, and psychology. In addition, information about the daily activities of our ancestors can be provided by art. In short, art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offer us a deeper understanding than can be found in most history books.
In history books, objective information about the political life of a country is presented; that is, facts about politics are given, but opinions are not expressed. Art, on the other hand, is subjective: it reflects emotions and opinions. The great Spanish painter Francisco Goya was perhaps the first truly “political” artist. In his well-known painting The Third of May 1808, he criticized the Spanish government for its misuse of power over people.
In the same way, art can reflect a culture’s religious beliefs. For hundreds of years in Europe, religious art was almost the only type of art that existed. Churches and other religious buildings were filled with paintings that described people and stories from the Bible. Although most people couldn’t read, they could still understand the Bible stories in the pictures on church walls. By contrast, one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its absence of human and animal images. This reflects the Islamic belief that statues are not holy.
41 More can be learned about a culture from a study of art history than general history because _____.
A. art history show us nothing but the political values
B. general history only focuses on politics
C. art history gives us an insight into the essential qualities of a time and a place
D. general history concerns only religious beliefs, emotions and psychology
42 Art is subjective in that _____.
A. a personal and emotional view of history is presented through it
B. it only reflects people’s anger or sadness about social problems
C. it can easily arouse our anger about their government
D. artists were or are religious, who reflect only the religious aspect of the society
43 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. In history books political views of people are entirely presented.
B. Francisco Goya expressed his religious belief in his painting The Third May, 1808.
C. In the Middle East, you can hardly find animal or human figures on palaces or other buildings.
D. For centuries in Europe, painters had only painted on walls of churches or other religious buildings.
44 The passage mainly discusses _____.
A. the development of art history
B. the differences between general history and art history
C. what we can learn from art
D. the influence of artists on art history
45 It can be concluded from the passage that _____.
A. Islamic artists only paint images of plants, flowers or objects in their paintings
B. It is more difficult to study art history than general history
C. a history teacher must be quite objective
D. artists painted people or stories from the Bible to hide their political beliefs
41 C 根据文章第一段最后一句“art expresses the essential qualities of a time and a place, and a study of it clearly offer us a deeper understanding than can be found in most history books”可知,学习艺术的历史比学习一般的历史更能帮助我们了解一国的文化,这是因为艺术表达了某个时刻某个地点最本质的特征。
43 C 根据第三段中最后一句“one of the main characteristics of art in the Middle East was (and still is) its absence of human and animal images”可知,中东地区艺术作品的主要特征之一是没有出现人类和动物的形象。

Once learning stops, vegetation sets in. It is a common fallacy to regard school as the only workshop for the acquisition of knowledge. On the contrary, learning should be a never-ending process, from the cradle to the grave. With the world ever changing so fast, the cease from learning for just a few days will make a person lag behind. What’s worse, the animalistic instinct dormant deep in our subconsciousness will come to life, weakening our will to pursue our noble ideal, sapping our determination to sweep away obstacles to our success and strangling our desire for the refinement of our character. Lack of learning will inevitably lead to the stagnation of the mind, or even worse, its fossilization. Therefore, to stay mentally young, we have to take learning as a lifelong career.

As food is to the body, so is learning to the mind. Our bodies grow and muscles develop with the intake of adequate nutritious food. Likewise, we should keep learning day by day to maintain our keen mental power and expand our intellectual capacity. Constant learning supplies us with inexhaustible fuel for driving us to sharpen our power of reasoning, analysis, and judgment. Learning incessantly is the surest way to keep pace with the times in the information age, and an infallible warrant of success in times of uncertainty.

When it comes to the reasons for climate change, exorbitant emission of carbon dioxide has been held first accountable for the cause. Our industrialization gives out poison gases and other man-made chemical compounds by an increasing tendency of using automobiles and modern machines.
